DIY Sequin Minnie Mouse Ears

For the ears I used my serger to sew the ears but you can do one of two things if you don’t have a serger. You can use a regular sewing machine or hand sew the ears together. You will need to be just a bit gentler when stuffing your ears if you hand sew and make sure to use small stitches.

Ear Instructions:

Supplies needed for Ears:

  • 4-4″ circles from sequin fabric
  • 2-3.5″ circles from interfacing/felt
  • Glue gun and glue sticks
  • batting/stuffing

1. Turn sequin fabric so sequins are facing inside.(for black ears you will need to put the black fabric on the outside of the circles. It should be so the fabric will be on the inside of the ears when turned right side out.)

2. Sew about 1/4″ around the edge leaving a 2″ opening.

3. Turn ears right side out so sequins are now on the outside of the ear.

4. Take the 3.5″ interfacing pieces and fold them so you can insert them into the ear.(for black ears insert the interfacing between the lining fabric) Open the interfacing and adjust so they sit nicely inside the ear the curved edge needs to be at the open end of the ear. You don’t want any puckers or folds so you may have to work the interfacing a bit.

5. Carefully add stuffing inside the ears on both sides of the interfacing. You can decide how puffy you want your ears. I didn’t want mine too puffy. Work the batting inside the ears until it looks how you like it, and it lays smooth.

6. Carefully glue the sequin fabric to the interfacing by over lapping the edges.

You can set your ears aside and lets move onto making the bow!

Are the headbands you got from Amazon bigger than the ones used by Disney? My problem is that the ones from Disney squeeze my head and I can't wear them longer than to take a quick picture. Thank you for the great tutorial.

Diana, I have the same problem and honestly it is just trial and error as to the size of the headband. If I were you I would use a headband you already own that doesn't hurt your head. If that is an option.

Love this!!!! I mistakenly ordered 1/2" Headbands from Amazon and they are def not wide enough!!! Can you tell me which headbands you ordered? Are they satin covered and do you get the ones with teeth? Thank you so much!!!

Thank you for sharing - I am so excited to make these! I was just wondering if the ears stay up well or if they flop around. I have made ears with fabric over cardboard and they were very sturdy, so I'm wondering how these will be once they're all put together.

Katie, They stand very well just like the ones you buy in the Parks!

Dot, I use one inch wide headbands and I pick them up where ever I can find them! I have even found some at the dollar store! Good luck!

Hi Laura, Thanks for a great tutorial. I was wondering if you could sew in the interface as you are sewing the ears together?

Thank you for making this tutorial! I'm planning a girls' trip to Disneyland soon and I'm wondering how many pairs of ears do you think you could make from one runner? I don't want to order the wrong number!
  22. Laura says:
    May 9, 2018 at 7:44 AM
I didn't only because it acts as a stabilizer in the middle of the ear. Plus the pattern piece does not allow for seam allowances.
  23. Laura says:
    May 9, 2018 at 7:45 AM
If you placed the pattern pieces carefully I would say maybe 3 per runner. I would order an extra runner just to be safe. If you order from Amazon you can always return it if you dont use it.
  24. Danielle says:

Thank you for this tutorial! I'm trying to make several pairs of ears at once for a girls trip. About how many do you think you could get out of each runner?

I love this tutorial! I have seen/read so many. This is nice and detailed. Quick question, pardon my ignorance but when you talk about stiff interfacing...which kind? I know nothing about it and there are so many types and weights! Also, once put inside the ears you mention 'opening it'? So that means the filling will go inside the interfacing and not between the interfacing and the fabric correct?
  27. Laura says:
    July 12, 2018 at 6:38 PM
Hello, I apologize for the confusion let me see if I can answer your questions. As far as interfacing goes your right, it comes in various weights and stiffness, I used a very stiff interfacing. I dont want to sound like I am not answering your question but the best thing to do is ask the sales associate at the fabric store to help you find a fairly stiff interfacing. It is hard to explain without being able to see and feel the different weights of interfacing. This Amazon link might help https://amzn.to/2KUkVok . When I mentioned "opening" the interfacing I was referring to unfolding the interfacing as I had to fold it in thirds to get it to fit through the small opening left in the ear. You are correct the filling/stuffing goes in between the interfacing and the inside/back of the sequin fabric. I put batting on both sides of the interfacing. I just kept putting small amounts inside until I liked the way it looked. Again I apologize for all the confusion. If this does not answer your questions please let me know! Laura

I was wondering what stitch you used to sew the ears?
  29. Laura says:

Hello Brenda, I just used a straight stitch for all the sewing.
