My oldest Dachshund Sophie had what I thought was a seizure. Luckily now that I replay what happened I don’t think it was a seizure at all just an over reacting dog mom!! LOL. Sophie is 16 years young and is showing signs of aging so am I! After she had this what I thought was a seizure I became extremely emotional about her days with me becoming fewer and fewer. It breaks my heart to think of losing either of my girls but this is a reality.
The first way I feel like I can safeguard my senior dogs is making sure they get good veterinary care. I did take Sophie in to see our favorite Veterinarian Dr.McCormick. She came home with a pretty clean bill of health nothing out of the norm that isn’t age related. I know my girls don’t always like going to the vet but especially with senior pets they need routine checkups. Cinnie went in as well and unfortunately needs to have a tooth pulled. OUCH! Good Veterinary care is a must and finding a great Veterinarian you can trust will help both you and your pets.
I shared with you the special dietary needs that senior dogs can have. Now I love to eat so I also feel strongly that giving your dog the best formulated food for them is another way you can safeguard your senior dog. I have continued to feed both my girls Purina® Pro Plan® Bright Mind™ honestly I feel that this contributes to their overall well being.
Purina® Pro Plan® Bright Mind™ Adult 7+ formulas contain a special blend of enhanced botanical oils shown to promote memory, attention and train-ability in dogs age 7+. Differences you may see in your dog are in his interaction with you, interest in playing, and ability to adapt and cope with change
Like puppies, senior dogs have special dietary needs. For example, many older dogs benefit from diets that are high in protein to help maintain lean body mass. Foods that are optimal for senior dogs have the following characteristics:
- Slightly decreased fat (vs. adult food). A diet with less fat helps your senior dog maintain a healthy body condition.
- High level of antioxidants. Senior dogs can benefit from antioxidants that help support their immune systems.
- Highly digestible formula. Your senior dog’s digestive system can benefit from a product that is easy to digest
You can find Purina Pro Plan Bright Mind Formula at your local Petsmart!
Senior dogs can bring so much joy to our lives and teach us so much. As pet owners it is our responsibility to give our pets the best possible lives they can have. I wouldn’t trade either one of my girls for all the money in the world! I will continue to feed my girls the best food for them and in my mind Purina Pro Plan Bright Mind Formula is the right choice for my girls.

Thanks for the series on keeping your senior dog safe. People often neglect their senior dogs because they’re set in their ways. However, it’s just as imperative to keep them safe as it is a puppy. Many thanks for raising attention to this issue.
We actually just wrote on getting older dogs that never had a dog crate used to one: https://bestdogcratesandbeds.com/old-dogs-new-crates/. I think it goes in line with what you’re conveying. Many thanks!!!
