Avalanche Bark! The Candy, the Myth, the Mystery!!!

May 25, 2012 by Laura Filed Under: RECIPE

FacebookTweetYummlyPin

I have been hearing a lot about something called  Avalanche Bark. So I started poking around the internet to find out what the buzz is about! I found all kinds of recipes, some with variations but I had never tasted this delicacy so before I made mine I wanted to go straight to the source!! Off to the mall I went!! Here is what I found!

And this…

Eight dollars later I had my treasure!! This stuff is expensive! I got a piece that was less than half a pound so I figure it costs somewhere around $16 a pound!

I wanted to see how much it actually cost to make this yummy treat so here is my breakdown:

Vanilla Candy Melts $3.99

Peanut Butter $1.00 (I used 1/4c. and the whole jar cost about $3.99 so this is a high estimate)

Marshmallow $.75 (I only used part of the bag and the whole bag cost $1)

Chocolate Chips $1.00 (Whole bag cost $3.00 I used less than 1/2 cup)

Rice Kripies $1.00 (box cost $1.99 on sale again $1.00 is a high estimate)

So total estimated cost for over 1lb of home made Avalanche Bark is $6.74.  Wow that is an amazing cost difference!!

Now to make things even funner I decided to have a blind taste test with some of my foodie friends at work!  I prepared 15 samples of each confection!

As you can see I used white and brown cupcake liners to distingushe which was which I only knew which one was the “Knock-off” and which one was the “Gourmet”!

Here they are side by side!

Can you tell the difference??  My 15 taste testers had a hard time to determining which was which!!  The results were fun!!   DRUM ROLL PLEASE!!!!!

9 chose the “Knock off” as the genuine article!!!  I was impressed!!  One subject stated the “Knock off” had the taste, texture and appearnce of being made by 100K industrial equiptment!!!  NOPE it was made in my kitchen with a wooden spoon and a microwavable bowl!!  LOVE IT!!

My good foodie friend Jason from “I Beat it First” picked the “Knock off” as the Gourmet!!  I love fooling him!!! LOL!!  Now Alan the “Czar of Char” picked the “Gourmet” treat right off the bat!!

So do you want to know which is which?  The “Knock-off” was in the white and the “Gourmet” was in the brown!!  In the side by side the “Gourmet” is on the top and the “Knock-off” on the bottom!!  Did you have it right???

Ok I bet your all dying for the recipe so here is my rendiditon!!  I would make a couple of changes, first add a little bit more Peanut butter bumping it up to 1/2 a cup, second add the chocolate chips in the mix as they fell off the top, and third do a chocolate drizzle on top with both dark chocolate and white chocolate!!  Ok my readers here is my original recipe!

Ingredients Method

Ingredients

  • • 16 oz bag of WhiteCandy Melts Or Almond Bark
  • • 1/4 cup creamy peanut butter
  • • 4 cups Rice Krispies
  • • 2 cups mini marshmallows
  • • 1/4 cup mini chocolate chips + 2 Tbsp for garnish.

Method

  1. Line a 9x13" pan with parchment paper or spray with Pam.
  2. In microwave-safe bowl pour in white candy melts and heat on 50% power for 1 minute. Stir and continue in 30 second increments until chips are melted.
  3. Combine the peanut butter with the melted chips and add the krispies.
  4. Let cool approx 15 – 20 minutes stirring every 5 minutes or so to help cool.
  5. Add the marshmallows stir to combine. Pour mixture into the prepared pan and spread evenly, pressing lightly with the back of your spoon, but do not compact too much, otherwise it will get hard.
  6. Press the remaining chocolate chips into the top for garnish.
  7. When the bars are completely cooled cut into squares and enjoy!

I had so much fun with this projest!!  An a HUGE THANK YOU goes out to my team members who helped me with the blind tasting!!
