DIY Freezer PB&J Sandwiches

School is fast approaching and its time for moms to get everything in order. Well try to anyways. In our house we love those little frozen PB&J sandwiches that you can buy in the freezer section of the super market. Well I sat down and calculated the cost of each sandwich and was appalled at the price we were paying for convenience. I decided I needed to make our own DIY Freezer PB&J Sandwiches.

I decided to pull out the calculator one more time. This time to calculate the cost of 1 loaf of bread, 1 jar of peanut butter and 1 jar of grape jelly, then I divided it by the amount of PB&J sandwiches I could make. HUGE savings.  (I did not factor in the price of the sandwich cutter and sealer I found on Amazon because it can be used over and over again every time I wanted to make a batch of these sandwiches so it just didn’t make sense to try and figure that cost into this batch of sandwiches.)

Now I’m sure you all know how to make a PB&J sandwich but there is one special trick to making freezer PB&J’s. You need to put peanut butter on both sides of the bread with the jelly in the middle.

I bet your wondering why you need to make the sandwiches this way. Well it is to keep the bread from getting soggy from the jam or jelly. Jams and jellies are water based, peanut butter is not so it seals the bread from the water in the jelly. Just a little bit of science for you! Place your jelly in the middle of the bread you can spread it out but it usually ends up just fine if you don’t.

DIY freezer PB&J Sandwiches 3Its a two piece sandwich cutter. The outside white piece cuts the crust off the bread and the inner blue portion seals the two pieces of bread. You place it over the sandwich and press down. I moved the whole thing around a little to make sure it cut through the bread and removed the crust.

DIY freezer PB&J Sandwiches 6Look how pretty the inside looks! YUMM! We love these PB&J sandwiches.

DIY freezer PB&J Sandwiches 7I was able to get 11 sandwiches out of one loaf of sandwich bread. I used only a portion of both the jelly and the peanut butter so the savings are huge! The other benefit is that you can control what goes into these sandwiches. Want to use whole wheat bread or another type of bread then you can. I was also thinking about making up other types of sandwiches too. Just be careful not to spread the insides to the edge of the bread.

DIY Freezer PB&J Sandwiches featureI wrapped these individually and put them back into the bread bag and put them all in the freezer. It didn’t even take me that long to make the whole loaf of bread into sandwiches. So now were set! Your kiddos will love these and when you run out of time to make lunches you can have these ready to go.
