Interesting Facts About Sunscreen
- There are two types of UV rays. UVA are the “aging” rays that damage and prematurely age your skin. UVB rays are what give you a sunburn. Use a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects you from UVA and UVB rays.
- SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. What that means is without any protection you get a sunburn in 10 minutes. If you use a SPF 30 sunscreen, you would be protected for 30 times longer. So 10 minutes x 30 = 300 minutes until you get a sunburn. Experts recommend that everyone uses at least a 30 SPF sunscreen.
- Mineral sunscreens sit on top of your skin and reflect the sun’s rays. Zinc oxide is a mineral that contains the broadest spectrum protection. Mineral sunscreens provide protection as soon as they are applied.
- Chemical sunscreens are absorbed into your skin and actually absorb the UV rays. Chemical sunscreens usually take 20 minutes to become effective after they are applied.
- Chemical sunscreens can bleach coral reefs. Certain beaches around the world will not allow you to use chemical sunscreens as to protect the reefs.
Did you know that there are even Sunscreen Toxicity Ratings??? I had no clue!!
Living in Arizona we have to make sure we protect our skin even in the winter time so when a good sale happens I like to stock up!!
