I was on my way home from work the other day and remembered Labor Day is coming up and I needed to come up with a delicious dish for dinner! So how about Grilled Teriyaki Ginger Pinwheels!
I am pretty lucky because one of my favorite stores Smart and Final is right on my way home!! I pulled into Smart and Final and they had just reopened it as a Smart and Final Extra! What this means is the store has more bulk foods, regular sized foods, whole foods, gravity bins for grains, nut and healthy snacks, coffee, and more!! I just love it!! It was so fun to see how much bigger the meat section was and I didn’t have to buy 100 lbs of meat.
Here is a look at the ingredients for this tasty dish. There really are only a few ingredients but I will tell you this dish is a little labor intensive but sooo worth it!
Let me tell you about this cut of beef I found. I thought I was buying a skirt steak but this is actually a Flap Steak and I am so glad I stumbled upon it! This cut of beef can be a chewy tough cut of beef if not prepared properly. The Flap Steak I found at Smart and Final was a thin cut which I was really glad because that meant I didn’t have to butterfly the meat for my dish!! Score!! Butterflying meat is hard to do well and I am no butcher!!! All I did was trim both pieces of meat to make them rectangle shaped.
Now this dish calls for a lot of freshly sliced green onions so I started slicing! It took about two bunches of beautiful green onions!! And yes these were on sale at Smart and Final too!! I also found a beautiful piece of fresh ginger!!
I used my micro plane to grate up about 1 tablespoon of ginger and put it in the bowl with the onions!! I wish you could smell how fragrant the onions and ginger are!
After adding the sizzling hot oil to the onions and ginger I let it cool and then layered it on the meat.
With both pieces of meat end to end I started rolling the meat with the onion filling in the middle
I did not have any butchers twine so I uses some cotton yarn to tie the meat to hold it together! It worked just fine!!
With a sharp knife I carefully sliced between each string to create 4 pinwheels.
using bamboo skewers I carefully placed two into each pinwheel.
Off to the grill we went!! They turned out like this!!! Oh my soooo delicious!
Grilled Teriyaki Ginger Pinwheels
Ingredients
- 1/4 C olive oil
- 2 C thinly sliced green onions
- 1-2 T fresh grated ginger
- 1 lb thin sliced Flap Steak
- Salt and Pepper to taste
- Teriyaki sauce or glaze I used Kikomans
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in small saucepan until shimmering or when an onion is dropped in sizzles immediately. Place ginger and onions in small bowl. Season with salt. When oil is hot pour over onions and ginger. I should sizzle for a few seconds. Let cool.
- Lay steak on cutting board and season with salt and pepper. Spread onion ginger mixture over steak.
- Carefully roll steak away from you (the grain should run width-wise) tightening as you roll until it is a cylinder. Let it rest seam side down.
- Tie tightly with twine about every 2 inches. Cut slices between each twine to make pinwheels. Insert 2 skewers into each pinwheel crossing skewers in the middle of each pinwheel.(see photos) I trimmed each skewer to make it more manageable on the grill.
- Heat grill to high heat. Place pinwheels on grill and cook without moving until well charred 3-5 minuets. Flip steaks and grill on second side about another 3-5 minuets. Lower heat to medium heat and begin basting with Teriyaki sauce. Flip pinwheels basting each side when flipped. I based and flipped a few times because I love Teriyaki sauce. Continue cooking until meat is no longer pink or a thermometer inserted registers 120 degrees.
- Transfer to platter, let rest for 5 minuets, baste with more sauce and serve with fresh onions sprinkled on top.
This steak was such a pleasant surprise it was tender and so flavorful!! That ginger and onion combination was amazing and the sweet Teriyaki glaze oh man so so good!! This will definitely be served again!!! Only next time I will make twice as much because I could eat so much of this dish!!
I loved the new Smart and Final Extra so much I went back on Saturday to pick up a few more things like ice cream which was on sale for $1.99 and it was a name brand ice cream!! We love ice cream at our house!
What is your favorite cut of beef??? What is on your menu for Labor Day???
