With Thanksgiving just around the corner I like to get my baking in a little early! Pies are a must at every Thanksgiving feast and this Chocolate Chip Walnut Pie is just about the only pie I make at the holidays!
I came across this pie when I lived in Connecticut and was working as a nanny. When I first arrived in CT the mom I worked for took me out for a drive so I could kind of acclimate myself to the area. We ended up at this adorable little cafe, on the menu was “Chocolate Chip Walnut Pie” I had to try it!! It was amazing, a cross between a warm chocolate chip cookie and a gooey pecan pie!!! I was in heaven.
Well after that I went in search of the recipe…now this was way before the internet was a household commodity!! I searched and searched and searched. Finally about 10 years later I stumbled upon the recipe and began making this pie ONLY during the holidays!
We love walnuts in our house too! So this recipe incorporates walnut very easily! Walnuts seamlessly incorporate into dishes and add texture, taste, flavor and depth to any meal of the day. Did you know walnuts are the oldest known tree food, dating back to 10,000 B.C.? Walnuts have been cultivated for over a millennia. That’s a long time!
I like to buy walnuts in larger quantities so I want to maintain the fresh taste of California walnuts so you need to keep them cold. If you’ll be storing them for a month or longer, store them in your freezer. Or if your not storing them for a long time you will want to store them in an air-tight container and keep them away from foods with strong odors.
This pie is extremely easy to make. If you like gooey chocolate chip cookies you will love this pie served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or with fresh whipped cream!
Now I can’t make a pie crust to save my life so I use a store bought pie crust and I usually buy the most expensive that I can find. Now if I’m feeling really sneaky I put the frozen pie shell in my own pie plate! No one will ever know I didn’t make my own pie crust!!
Another key to making this pie is to make sure the butter is soft, not melted but soft I put mine in the microwave for about 20 seconds and that does the trick!
It makes this rich and creamy chocolate chip walnut filling! Ok the batter is really tasty too but dont eat it because it has raw eggs in it!LOL!! You really want to wait until it is baked anyways! Top with fresh whipped cream and oh my its sooooo good! I even drizzled a little chocolate sauce over it. Ya I had to do it!
