We all love Ice Cream Sandwiches and they happen to be one of my favorite frozen treats. I love the classic vanilla ice cream chocolate cookie ones, I love the fun flavored ones too. Have you ever thought of all the delicious things you can make with an Ice Cream Sandwich? I have seen all kinds of super cute looking cakes made with ice cream sandwiches and all kinds of other delicious creations. I put on my thinking cap and the wheels started turning. Have you ever thought to make a classic banana split starting with a yummy Ice Cream Sandwich? Genius I know, and that is how these delicious FatBoy Banana Splits came to be.
I was a bit curious about the history of the ice cream sandwich so I did just a bit of research and this is what I found.
“According to the book Sugar and Snow: A History of Ice Cream Making by Jeri Quinzio, the ice cream sandwich was created in 1899 by an unknown pushcart peddler in the Bowery neighborhood of New York City. These sandwiches consisted of vanilla ice cream pressed between two thin graham wafers. The treat was revolutionary not only because it was hand-held and portable, but also because the heat from the hands helped to soften the ice cream, making it easier to eat. ”
“In July of 1900 The New York Tribune, the popular newspaper of the time, published an article about the pushcart vendor who was selling the sandwiches. According to the article the man was so busy pressing the sandwiches to order into a tin mold that he didn’t have time to make change and insisted that customers pay the exact price of one cent.”
So now that we know a little about Ice Cream Sandwiches let’s talk about FatBoy Ice Cream Sandwiches. I have a confession here I had not had one of these amazing Ice Cream Sandwiches until last week and boy let me tell you I am in LOVE!
“FatBoy ice cream sandwiches are the original “old school cool.” With an introduction that goes back to the confectionery golden age in 1925, FatBoy sandwiches put other sandwiches to shame with their thick, “ginormous” serving size, truly earning the name “FatBoy.”
FatBoy was featured on UnWrapped which is one of my favorite foodie shows! Yes I watch a lot of food TV! But take a look!
Now my idea to make my FatBoy fatter was to take a spin off of the traditional Banana Split. I cut the FatBoy sandwiches on the diagonal to make them triangles.
I placed them cut side down on the plate and then went to town!
Now you can’t have a banana split without the banana so in the traditional banana split fashion the bananas were placed along side the FatBoys. Chocolate, Strawberry, Caramel ice cream toppings then were generously drizzled over the mountains of ice cream sandwiches. I even had Marshmallow Ice Cream topping which did not make the cut. Whipped cream, chopped nuts and even a maraschino cherry topped the massive FatBoy Banana Split. Oh you cant forget the sprinkles!
Oh my goodness it was so good. I could not finish the whole thing. What creation would you make with a FatBoy Ice Cream Sandwich?
